AUSTRALIA’S OLDEST PEDO? 95yo pervert to be sentenced for sexually abusing 10yo child

EXCLUSIVE: Only a few years shy of his 100th birthday, a man now considered to perhaps be Australia’s most elderly known convicted paedophile will face sentencing later this year over the continued sexual abuse of a 10-year-old child. True Crime News Weekly publisher, Serkan Ozturk, reports.

It was a sickly historic event in the last week of May that largely passed by unnoticed by just about everybody. Save for a brief, one-paragraph mention in a barely read local newspaper in regional New South Wales, it would be difficult even for True Crime News Weekly to be presenting this report. It is a criminal incident though that deserves to be known by a greater audience.

On May 29, criminal history in Australia was likely made when a 95-year-old man became possibly the oldest person in the country to be found guilty over child sex offences. The case – as reported by the Bega District News in a minor item on the last day of May – was sadly just the latest in a long line of incidents in history and the present day of men abusing young children.

A 95-year-old Victorian man is to be sentenced over a historic child sex offence in the Bega Valley. In Bega Local Court on Tuesday, Bryan Kevin Fitzgerald of Nunawading faced a charge of aggravated sexual assault on a victim aged 10-11. The alleged offence took place in Eden in the early 1990s. On Tuesday, seven other charges relating to the sexual assault of a person under 16 were withdrawn. On the remaining matter, Fitzgerald was committed for sentencing at Bega District Court on August 27.

Following an inquiry from True Crime News Weekly, NSW Police had a quick dig through their records to see if Mr Fitzgerald was the oldest known convicted paedophile in the state, and perhaps all of Australia.

“We can’t confirm whether or not he is the oldest but he is amongst the most elderly person charged with these offences,” a NSW Police spokesperson said after a day’s search through the police records and crime archives.

A cursory online investigation by True Crime News Weekly into Mr Fitzgerald has not revealed any images of the accused, but we have managed to locate historical electoral roll records as well as tradesperson licencing records that may be relevant to the identity of Australia’s most elderly convicted paedophile.

The electoral roll records reveal that a ‘Bryan Kevin Fitzgerald’ was living in Victoria until the early 1970s but that by 1977 Mr Fitzgerald had moved interstate to New South Wales and was in the district of Eden-Monaro. Eden of course is the town where the offences involving the 10-year-old child occurred.

At the time of the offence in the early 1990s, Mr Fitzgerald would have been close to 70 years of age. It is not known whether the victim was a family member or child known to Mr Fitzgerald.

When he moved to NSW in the mid-1970s, the electoral rolls show that our Mr Fitzgerald had also slightly altered his name by adding ‘Nethercote’ as a middle name. It is unclear as to why he did so. However, by 1980 Mr Fitzgerald had once again dropped the name.

Other online details sourced by True Crime News Weekly reveal that Mr Fitzgerald was born in 1922 and that he held tradesperson contractor licences as a drainer, gasfitter, plumber and roof plumber. All his licences expired in June 1991, around the same time Mr Fitzgerald has now admitted to sexually abusing a 10-year-old child.
