A teen Ukrainian model’s brave testimony has helped convict a vicious rapist bus driver in Turkey to 25 years in jail.
The court in Istanbul sentenced the driver, known only as Erdem K, to 20 years in jail on charges of sexual abuse and an additional five years on charges of deprivation of liberty.
The Ukrainian model was only 16-years-old and on a visit to Istanbul when Mr Erdem used a knife and the fact she was alone as the only passenger on a bus he was driving to launch a truly horrific attack.
The victim had taken the bus from the Levent area of Istanbul’s popular Besiktas district however the driver diverted the bus to a block of land near football club Galatasaray’s Turk Telekom Arena stadium.
It was only then that the victim realised she was the only passenger aboard and asked the driver to let her off. He, however, refused and instead demanded sex. He then showed her a knife. The victim told the court what happened next:
“He told me he wouldn’t kill me if I didn’t tell anyone about it. I couldn’t talk because I was scared. Then I started to cry. When the incident happened I was 16 years old,” she said.
The court was told that after the attack Mr Erdem drove the victim to nearby where she was staying and dropped her off. In a sick twist, the driver then told the model to “forgive me and take care”.
In his testimony to the court though Mr Erdem claimed the victim had been chatting to him and sharing some cigarettes before they had a consensual sexual encounter.
“Later I dropped her off to where she stayed,” he claimed. “She waved at me as she left.”
The court didn’t buy those lies and Istanbul now has one less sex offender roaming the streets.
